A Discussion on the Pathways for Cultivating Marine-oriented Education Master’s

Degree Students in Higher Education Institutions:

A Case Study of Ningbo University and Zhejiang Ocean University

YANG Ning, LI Xue, WANG Yinuo

Abstract: Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized the strategy of accelerating the building of a maritime power at the National Congress of the Communist Party of China, entrusting the responsibility of strengthening Marine education in primary and secondary schools in our country. Now, master’s degree students in education have become an increasingly important source of teachers for marine education in primary and secondary schools. However, at present, the curriculum design, research directions, and practical arrangements of the education master’s degree programs in marine-related universities lack a strong marine flavor. Graduates from these programs often lack marine literacy, and there is an urgent need to incorporate marine education elements. This paper takes Ningbo University and Zhejiang Ocean University as examples to investigate and analyze the training programs for their liberal arts and history education master’s degree students. It proposes several countermeasures, including adjusting the training programs, compiling marine textbooks for primary and secondary schools, increasing marine-related social practices, strengthening cooperation with marine-related primary and secondary schools, and promoting the employment of graduates in coastal and island areas. The aim is to cultivate teachers who understand, know, and love the ocean, thereby addressing the shortage of marine education teachers in primary and secondary schools.
