Title: George Deacon and the Development of British Oceanography in the Postwar Era

Abstract: George Deacon was a central figure in the development of British oceanography after World War II. Amid the transition between wartime and peacetime, he played a key role in establishing the independence of the National Institute of Oceanography and contributed significantly to institutional design, international cooperation, and scientific applications. Deacon facilitated the transformation of oceanography from a military-affiliated science into a multidisciplinary model of Big Science and helped Britain regain its international voice in oceanographic research through global initiatives such as the International Geophysical Year. While emphasizing science in service of national strategy, he also promoted the commercial application of oceanographic findings, striving to balance scientific autonomy with practical utility. His work not only laid the institutional foundation for British oceanography but also shaped its scientific identity and international role during the Cold War.
